Internship Program at AOS
AOS was delighted to host two students, Lily Shi and Oliver Parker, from Cambridge University for an internship over their summer holidays this year. Read on to learn more about their experience at AOS and their adventures in Australia.

Lily Shi
During my internship at AOS Group in Melbourne, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in autonomous vehicle technology, working closely with both hardware and software. My primary focus was on wiring and testing two rovers with Ardupilot, learning Robot Operating System 2 (ROS2), and researching the integration of Ardupilot, Mission Planner, and ROS2 (via the mavros node) to enable multi-vehicle autonomous control. I also developed a line-following script for indoor navigation, which aimed to enable autonomous operation in GPS-denied environments such as warehouses.
AOS Group specialises in developing cutting-edge software solutions for industries like defence and logistics. Their focus on autonomous navigation systems, vehicle control, and communication frameworks provided the perfect environment for me to apply my engineering skills learnt from university to contribute to real-world projects. One of my most interesting experiences was working on the line-following project, which utilised computer vision techniques to allow vehicles to navigate autonomously indoors.
Throughout the internship, I worked closely with the engineering team, receiving invaluable guidance on both hardware setups and software challenges. This experience has been incredibly enriching, providing me with hands-on exposure to autonomous vehicle technology. The skills I developed—particularly in system integration and problem-solving—will be instrumental as I continue my journey in robotics and autonomous systems.
Oliver Parker
As an intern at AOS Group during my long vacation from Cambridge University this year, I have had the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects with a knowledgeable team of engineers from a diverse range of technical backgrounds. Building on my engineering studies, I have been able to learn from and contribute to AOS’s operations in navigating teams of autonomous vehicles.
A real highlight of my time was an object detection project, employing what I had learned about using convolutional neural networks for computer vision at university. It was very satisfying to help to construct a tool to detect objects in three dimensions, and communicate this to the vehicle; this improved functionality will help to deliver better collision avoidance through integration into the current Kelpie software.
The three months that I spent at AOS provided a priceless stepping stone into the world of software development, enabling me to learn a multitude of industry processes that are unlikely to make it into a university syllabus. I am very grateful for the support that I received from every member of the close-knit team and am certain that my experience was made both as enjoyable and as informative as possible as a result of the guidance that I was given access to at AOS.
Outside of work, the internship was a great way to see Australia: both in and around the vibrant city of Melbourne, as well as further afield in Queensland and New South Wales. Living in Melbourne gave me countless options to see professional sports, exhibitions, and eat and drink in some great spots. Just outside of the city though, Victoria boasts some stunning nature that is really just on Melbourne’s doorstep. Some time off gave me time to head north to Sydney to see the Blue Mountains, and up to Queensland for some coastal sunshine. The chance to see so much of Australia was the cherry on top of a superb three months with Agent Oriented Software.
